Why ‘Dispatches from the Spiritual Front?’

What does that even mean?

This publication is a kind of ‘Captain’s Log’ of observations, questions, theories, journal notes, explorations, speculations and perturbations — all meant to document the journey toward answering a question that matters to all followers of Jesus:

How then should we live?’

For believers — and seekers — this really is the front line of our lives where we battle the forces of evil (yes they are real) as well as ordinary daily inertia that work to hold us captive to the old ways of living.

‘Dispatches’ is a conversation about the search for the truth that sets us free, not a presentation of tidy, big-brained answers. I hope every day to take myself off of spiritual autopilot and steer my life into genuine discipleship, come what may.

If that describes your desire as well, I pray you’ll come along.

Finally, as an artist, I love sharing the process and products of creative life, so you can expect helpings of that as well.

A few fun facts …

  • Until recently I was the owner and publisher of a small town newspaper in Central Colorado. I understand people, having written about their lives from every angle.

  • For the past quarter century I’ve (mostly) made living with words, ghost writing books and online articles for others. Now it’s my turn.

  • I live off the grid (in an Earthship I built) with my wife Issa and our jumbo orange cat named Chief Inspector Smalls.

  • I served in the U.S. Army from 1980-88 as a Counterintelligence Special Agent. I had foreign service tours in Korea and in West Berlin (before the wall came down).

  • I love stories (movies, books, songs, you name it) and delight in finding artists whose creations aren’t mired in darkness and filth.

  • I am a singer-songwriter — and Issa is an amazing vocalist. We look forward to sharing our music with you.

  • Between us, Issa and I have seven children (all grown now) and nine grandchildren. An eighth son was lost to accidental overdose in 2021.
